1.3 million Google accounts compromised by Gooligan Android bug

The bug formerly known as “Ghost Push” has gotten some new life from some successful hackers. And its name is somewhat ridiculous: Gooligan.

Check Point Software and Google have been tracking down this bug, which spreads through the installation of malicious apps from third-party libraries, and seeing what Gooligan does. Once the app gets downloaded, malware inside the app siphons account credentials, roots your device, sticks in code into your apps and downloads more of them and abuses authentication tokens into your Google accounts for Google Play, Photos, Drive, Docs, Gmail and others.

gooligan-how-it-works

Your compromised account may “pen” fake, five-star reviews for apps on the Google Play Store.

Devices on Jelly Bean, KitKat and Lollipop are at risk with this bug — which is pretty much most of the Android smartphone market out there — and its blast radius of 1.3 million accounts has mostly been in Asia at 57 percent. 19 percent of the affected accounts are from the Americas, 15 percent are from Africa and 9 percent are from Europe. An estimated 13,000 accounts are getting hijacked every day.

info_4_revised_11-23-16

For a complete list of fake apps infected by Gooligan, head to our source link. You can also check to see if your Google account has been compromised at this site.

For its part, Google is tracking down all the fake apps and removing them from the Play Store as well as revoking the authentication tokens of Google accounts that may have been hijacked. It is also contacting internet service providers to take down servers where these Gooligan operations are taking place.

$379.00 MEGASALE – Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 – 12-Inch 2160×1440 Intel Core 2-In-1 w/ 128GB Storage

The great Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 is on sale today for as unbelievable little as just $379, down from $599, which was already good value, in today’s Microsoft Store exclusive:
https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Acer-Aspire-Switch-Alpha-12-SA5

Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 (SA5-271) was leaked by us earlier this year, and this is an impresse 12-inch Windows 10 2-in-1 tablet with backlit keyboard included, powered by a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, with 4GB of DDR3 RAM (1866 MHz), and 128GB of fast SSD storage, not to mention a well received 12-inch screen with 2160 x 1440 resolution and a built-in kickstand.

Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 also has a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a USB 3.0 port, complete dual-band a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, an 8 hour battery life, a silent innovative fanless LiquidLoop colling system, and it has proper digitizer pen support too, with Acer’s own pen being called Acer Active Pen.

Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 SALE

Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 SALE

The keyboard is very thin, but it is still backlit, and the keyboard connects to the tablet with pogo pins so there is a good solid contact between the keyboard and the tablet with no lag.

This is the best tablet Acer has ever made, and Acer’s engineers have put some serious thought into the making of it. So the value for money on a $379 Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 is good for those wanting a powerful, productive Windows 10 tablet with a high-resolution 12-inch screen and a Intel Core Skylake performance that is many steps above the Intel Atom powered tablets.

And this is the Acer Aspire Switch Alpha 12 Signature Edition too, meaning that there is no trialware or any other software you want to uninstall. Signature Editions feature only clean installations of Windows 10.

After all this time, why is setting up Android Wear still such a PITA?

I was so excited. For months, I’ve been wearing a Pebble Time – a good smartwatch, don’t get me wrong. But I really love Android Wear, and since my Moto 360 took a bad fall on a tile floor months ago, I have been Android Wearless. I had one brief flirtation with the Casio Smartwatch a few weeks back, but alas, the review period was only long enough to further whet my appetite. Android Wear is pretty honking cool. But man does it have issues.

Android Wear is in many ways more versatile than Pebble and its Timeline. I used to say that I never used my calendar so Timeline never mattered to me, but since then I’ve started obsessively using my calendar…and it still doesn’t matter all that much to me. There are some cool things that Pebble can do – last more than a week without charging, mostly – and I love the Pebble. But Android wear is so integrated into Google’s ecosystem, it’s a much more seamless experience. Especially now that I have Google Home, everything now ties in together with each other.

Pebble Time vs. Android WearVersatility

I can stream a podcast from my phone to Google Home and pause it with my watch. I can stream Netflix to my TV and…well, ok pause it with my watch. I can answer a phone call with my watch, route it to a Bluetooth headset, then when the call is over I can…PLAY Netflix with my watch. Who said I’m a one-trick pony? Some of that is possible with the Pebble, but Android Wear is simply a better experience.

But when it comes to setting up an Android Wear watch, let’s just say there’s some room for optimization. There are bases that haven’t been covered in the years that it has been out. I recently got a Moto 360 Sport, and while I won’t take you through the entire setup experience blow by blow, I will tell you that the damn thing almost came to blows. There was legitimate anger. I’m sorry, and I’m not proud.

It wasn’t pretty

But between factory resets, simple failures to detect the watch, restarts of the phone, forgetting Bluetooth, connecting to Bluetooth, forgetting Bluetooth again, and standing on my head while facing east on a Thursday, it was arguably the most frustrating part of my week, and I have two kids. I even took to Twitter to vent my rage, and I pretty much got reassuring nods in return. “Yeah brother. We hear you. Been there.”

But the problem with that is, this should not be a thing. Google has had years to work this out. It hasn’t gotten any better. Android Wear does work pretty well – or at least the Moto 360 Sport has – since I got it set up. But getting over that hump was enough to almost make me ask for my money back. It was only through sheer force of will and dogged perseverance that I can finally triumphantly hold up my wrist. And don’t even get me started with the watch face and that god-awful tutorial I had to go through half a dozen times.

Apple Watch vs Android WearDo it right

I have never set up an Apple watch. But I’m going to go out on a limb – and feel free to correct me in the comments if I am wrong – and say that it is nowhere near the clusterbleep that connecting an Android Wear watch to a phone is. Some of that is likely because one watch works with one operating system, all designed by the same company. So maybe Apple is on to something here.

And the really crappy part about all of this is – this isn’t even the reason Android Wear adoption is so low. Because people don’t find out about this until they’ve already adopted it. Sure, some will return the watch, or throw it in the garbage disposal if they’re anything like me. But the fact that Google rewards adopters with this miserable experience is basically unforgivable. And it leads to editorials like this, which will come up in the search results when someone ironically Google’s “smartwatch setup”. If they don’t run screaming from the store, that’s definitely a step in the right direction, but I’m not so sure “trial by fire” is a winning sales model.

Sharing is caring

Now, some of you have already dropped to the comments to tell me I’m crazy and every watch you’ve ever set up has been smooth as a banana peel. If that’s the case, I strongly suspect that you’re the outlier, not me. But now I’m curious. Share your Android Wear setup horror stories in the comments below. I’m told that misery loves company, so let’s all relive our misery below for the sake of all the others who come here to vent.

iCloud Calendar Spam Is Now a Thing, Here's How to Defeat It

Many iCloud account holders have been reporting an influx of spam calendar invitations lately. This is caused because macOS and iOS operating systems automatically scan the Inbox for calendar invites. These are then shown to users in the form of calendar invite prompts, and the email is deleted to avoid congestion. While it's a great feature for remembering events and reducing clutter in email, the increasing number of spam invites from brands and companies could get annoying.

Additionally, there is no way to ignore these invites, and you have to choose one of the three options - Accept, Maybe, Decline - in order to get rid of the push notification. This means the spammer receives a reply no matter what.

Luckily, there is a way to stop these invites altogether, reports the New York Times. Head to iCloud.com in Safari or any other Web browser. Log in using the credentials that you use on your iPhone. Click on Calendar > Settings icon > Preferences > Advanced > Invitations. Under Invitations tab set the option for 'Receive event notifications as' to 'Email to' rather than an 'In-app notification'.

This should stop all the calendar invite spam from hitting your notifications screen. There's also a separate workaround method to delete invites without sending the response to the spammer using macOS. Create a new iCloud calendar (not "On My Mac"), and then move the spam event to the new iCloud calendar. After moving it, delete the newly created iCloud calendar. Upon deleting, the Calendar will prompt you to select between "Delete and Don't Notify" and "Delete and Notify". Users have to then select "Delete and Don't Notify" to ensure that the spammer does not get any notification.

MacBook Pro 2016 With Touch Bar Now Available in India

Apple launched the new MacBook Pro 2016 in October, however, it refrained from announcing any availability details for the Indian market. In mid-November, the company quietly started rolling out stock of the MacBook Pro 2016 without Touch Bar into the Indian market, and now the Touch Bar variant has started to trickle in.

The new MacBook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar variant is now in stock with selected dealers. An Apple Reseller in Kerala, IT Net Infocomm, has announced on Twitter that it has the new Touch Bar variant in stock. The 13-inch Touch Bar variant is priced starting at Rs. 1,55,900, and the 15-inch variant is priced starting at Rs. 2,05,900.

(Also see: MacBook Pro 2016 Price, Specifications, Features, and Everything That's New)

We checked with a Mumbai-based retailer who said it had not received any units yet. The 2016 MacBook Pro is not listed on any of the e-commerce websites either, so it's likely that the stock has only just started trickling in, and will become more widely available soon.

The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar have an OLED panel and a Touch ID sensor replacing the function keys on the keyboard. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar's base model is powered by a 2.9GHz Intel 'Skylake' Core i5 dual-core processor with 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. The 13-inch model comes with integrated Intel Iris Graphics 550. There's Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2 support. It has a Retina (2560x1600 pixels) LED-backlit display with IPS technology and 227ppi pixel density. For connectivity, there is a 3.5mm audio jack and two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro laptop with Touch Bar's base model is powered by an Intel Skylake Core i7 quad-core SoC, running at 2.6GHz. The configuration gets you 256GB SSD storage. It packs 16GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon Pro 450 series graphics chip with dedicated 2GB of graphics memory. There's also a low-power Intel HD 530 Graphics chip built-in, and the computer switches between the two depending upon requirement. This model too boasts of 10 hours of battery life despite a smaller 76 watt-hour battery (the last generation had a 99.5 watt-hour battery).

Some MacBook Pro 2016 Users Are Reporting Graphics Card Issues

Apple unveiled the refreshed MacBook Pro in 13-inch and 15-inch variants in October, and some early buyers have started to provide feedback on their initial experience. A number of users are reporting failures and GPU glitches in their new MacBook Pros, with some even reporting unrecoverable crashes.

Some users claim that the graphics card goes kaput when using Adobe Media Encoder, and the computer eventually crashes, while others claim issues with the Photos app. One users' MacBook Pro started 'flashing violently with red/ green hues and a sort of chequerboard pattern.'

More than one user is also reporting com.apple.photos.ImageConversionService showing up in kernel panic logs. 9to5Mac also experienced 'some 'tearing' on the machine, where the desktop background starting showing through foreground windows across all apps'. Issues are being reported on both discrete and integrated GPU configurations of the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

All of these might just be separate technical hardware glitches that are bound to happen in a shipment of such massive stature. However, a user who experienced the graphics card issue on his MacBook Pro 2016 (Touch Bar variant) was told by an Apple Store representative that it was a 'hardware problem' without explaining any further.

It's too early to tell whether this is a widespread issue or not, and future experience reports from early owners will shed more light on the matter eventually. In iFixit's teardown, the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar received the lowest possible repairability score. The thin OLED strip that replaces the function keys is difficult to replace and scores just 1/10 for iFixit in repairability. Are you experiencing any difficulties or hardware issues on your new MacBook Pro 2016? Let us know in the comments below.

Should Google give up on Android tablets?

We’ve come to a bit of a crossroads lately. It’s like an intersection of bad for the folks at Google and we might just be at the point where we need to make a decision that could affect the future of technology. It’s time to decide what’s going to happen to tablets, and more accurately, Android tablets. This is the elephant that has been in the room for the past couple of years, so maybe it’s time to move the elephant out, so we have room for the Christmas tree.

Android tablets have never been all that popular. Some OEMs have made attempts at Android-powered tablets, but despite best efforts, Apple has dominated the tablet market practically from its inception. Recently, we’ve seen a wave of Windows tablets and 2-in-1’s, which is doing an admirable job of picking up those users who haven’t gotten iPads. Then, there’s Google and Android tablets. Yeah. What do we do about those?

Google Pixel C Review Keyboard 2Still kicking

Google itself hasn’t gone silently into that good night. The Pixel tablet (and now with phones to compliment it) is a pretty great offering into the tablet space. It has high quality specifications, and a pretty nice keyboard attachment, making it a solid competitor with the Windows offerings claiming to be a laptop replacement. With Google’s Pixel phones coming to market, it might be a good time to double down on this concept and get a new model out there. Brand awareness is a thing, and now would be a good time to strike while the iron is hot.

Google is also making a lot of strides into a connected ecosystem with Google Assistant being everywhere you want it to be. Google Home and The Pixel phones are both coming with Google Assistant and it’s only a matter of time before new phones start coming with it too. Tablets aren’t really a space Google can afford to pass on at the moment. Despite declining tablet sales, there still are tablet sales, which means people are still using them. As long as there is a market, Google can’t really afford to ignore it.

Plus, let’s face it, not everyone wants an Apple or Windows machine. There are many reasons to want to keep an Android tablet. Outside of just the Assistant, Google’s ecosystem is wide ranging in email, documents, calendars, storage, basically just about anything you’re going to be using while mobile. With that tight integration, it’s hard to step outside of Google’s ecosystem, once you’re in. Apps on iOS are decent, but Google’s doing it really slick on Android.

acer-chromebook-r13And yet…

But maybe that’s what Chromebooks are for? Chromebooks recently started using Android Apps, so there’s your strong ecosystem. Chromebooks also become a good work machine with the built-in keyboard/mouse, so it’s very much the best of both worlds. Given the relative price point of Chromebooks versus Apple and Microsoft tablets, Google could make a strong push in this market.

Plus, speaking of elephants in the room, let’s talk about phablets. Our phones are getting bigger and bigger. While that may not be such a good thing to some, larger phones mean there is less need for larger screens that come with tablets. An argument could be made that someone could carry around a small phone and a large tablet, but just from a strictly anecdotal standpoint, I don’t know many people that do that. And the sales numbers of tablets back that up.

Who decides?

So, which way do we go from here? Is it even up to Google? I mean, if Samsung wants to make a tablet, who is Google to stop it? And that’s another, bigger problem for Google – complete loss of control over its ecosystem. Recently, we’ve seen Google try to scale things back a bit and try to take the reins more, but Android remains the wild, wild west of the mobile OS world. So, maybe it’s not even up to Google any more. Still, the question needed to be asked, and now I’ve asked it.

So, what do you think? Are Android tablets still viable in today’s market? Is it time to flip the buffet table and push the reset button? Shall I mix a few more metaphors before we get to the end of this article? Sound off below and let’s see if we can figure this out.

The best Cyber Monday deals on iPads, laptops, and PCs

New HP Pavilion x360 Convertible w/ Intel Core i5 Kaby Lake Launched For $479 During Cyber Monday Week

The new HP Pavilion x360 Convertible with touchscreen and Windows 10 have been launched as a Signature Edition during the sales around the end of Black Friday weekend and start of the Cyber Monday week, on sale for a price of $479 for a few days:
https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/HP-Pavilion-x360-Convertible-15-bk193ms-Signature-Edition-2-in-1-PC/productID.5073652200

Computer brands really ought to be more original with the names of their computers sometimes, since it can be difficult for consumers to navigate in the jungle of new devices all the time, especially when a new computer has what appears to be the same name as its predecessor.

But this is the new HP Pavilion x360 Convertible, with the newest and recently launched 7th generation 2.5 GHz – 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 processor “Kaby Lake” and Intel HD 620 GPU, along with 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and a whopping 1TB of HDD storage.

HP Pavilion x360 Convertible

This is a 360 degree fully revolving laptop, so you can fold it entirely both ways, set it up in tent mode, and you can swipe, pinch, and touch the touchscreen as you would on a tablet, only on a large 15.6-inch screen with a Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution display.

It has a 8-9 hour battery life, so let’s say 8 hours from the 48 Wh Li-ion battery, with fast charge support where 90% of the battery charges in 1 1/2 hours.

Internet connectivity is supported across all 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac bands, and Bluetooth 4.2 (HP tells me the Bluetooth 4.0 specified in Microsoft Store is erroneous). It has a regular RJ-45 LAN jack too of course, with complete 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN speed support.

Ports include two USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2.0 port, and a HDMI port. Sensors includes accelerometer, gyroscope and eCompass on this Windows 10 convertible laptop.

It even has Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers, and HP’s new Wide Vision TrueVision HD camera.

The new HP Pavilion x360 Convertible have a modern finish without trying too hard, so it looks very appealing. It may not be as radical as the sexy looking smaller HP Spectre, but as a convertible, it offers more in way of practicality. And that matters a lot in a laptop.

There are still two more Windows 10 Kaby Lake laptops on sale in the same price range for a little while more, but not as a convertible.
