Japanese Vaprilware: Google Translate bubble wrap input

If there’s one society on our planet that takes April Fool’s Day very seriously, it’s the Japanese. Between their mannerisms and game shows, April 1st perfectly condenses everything down into a trope. And Google is no laggard in playing around.

It has “released” the Google Japanese Input Puchi Puchi Version. The “puchi” is the onomatopoeia for when bubble wrap, the input tool, is popped. And if there’s anything better than a keyboard for the most tactile input, you gotta know it’s bubble wrap. And while Google isn’t really mass producing them, it has open-sourced real firmware and component designs for the Puchi Puchi reader.

All sheets must have a width of five units with corresponding bubble spec, but can be coded to format multiple input layouts such as Braille, QWERTY and others. The default is GODAN romaji. The mechanism, available in stationery as well as a mobile “Handy Type” tool, reads the air pressure in each bubble to determine input.

If you’re looking for a DIY project this month, the GitHub repository is right here. Or, if you want a more immediate response to your translation queries, use Google Translate.

TL;DR: Why does everyone get lost on their way to lunch?

You know what it’s like, right? You’re on your way to lunch with Suzie, and you want to let her know you’re running late. Bixby will allow you to take a screenshot of the map showing your location and send it to her.

Because this happens every day, right? Pardon me for being a little salty here, but no, this doesn’t happen every day. In fact, it happens rarely. If I’m having lunch with someone, I get there on time. If I’m running late, I don’t send her a screenshot of a map showing my location. I’m not going to make her play the “Guess my commute” game. She has to calculate my position in relation to hers, do some algorithmic math factoring in average walking speed, wind direction, incline. No, hell no. I just text her with “be there in 10.”

But if you listen to every assistant maker out there – Bixby, Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana – this is apparently a really crushing problem that needs millions of lines of code and a learning engine to solve. Every demo of a personal assistant that I can remember has shown our protagonist going to lunch with someone, and some magical way to tell her (it’s usually a her, but that’s a different editorial) that you’re an idiot who didn’t bother to look up where the lunch place is or how to get there before you left.

Seriously Google, Samsung, Apple, everyone – this is a tired scenario which happens to literally no one. Find a new shiny object to dangle in front of your audiences please. If the best way you can sum up what your assistant does is SMSing a screenshot to someone who’s already mad at you, then your assistant sucks.

Asus ROG Strix GL553V Review

More than a decade ago, Asus launched its Republic of Gamers sub-brand to appeal to buyers who like high-performance products that they can show off, and are willing to pay more for that privilege. ROG products typically have grandiose names, aggressive styling, red accents, and lots of bling. PC components in the series are either overclocked or designed to support overclocking, and have elaborate (or at least elaborate-sounding) power, cooling and durability enhancements. The Strix name came about later, targeting gamers with the same aspirations but not necessarily the luxury of a bottomless budget.

ROG has since expanded into a top-level brand with a dedicated community and following of its own. In fact, the notebook we're reviewing today is surprisingly bereft of Asus branding. It's called the Republic of Gamers Strix GL553V, and you won't see the Asus name or logo anywhere on its box or body unless you look for them deliberately.

Asus, or rather ROG, is clearly targeting those who consider gaming their identity. If that sounds like you, read on.

DSC 0473 290917 230956 6455 ROG Strix GL553V

Asus ROG Strix GL553V look and feel
Gaming laptops are usually bulky and heavy in order to accommodate top-end components and the cooling they require, and this is no exception. We would have expected something a lot sleeker, considering the fact that Intel and Nvidia's latest chips run relatively cool, but we think that this is what people expect a serious gaming laptop to look like.

The first thing we noticed when unpacking the Strix GL553V was the neon orange clawmarks and ROG logo on the lid. We're used to seeing details like this which light up when a product is running, but this laptop looks like it's screaming for attention even when it's off. We found this to be a bit over the top, but maybe some potential buyers will like it.

The body of the laptop is plastic, but the surface of the lid is metal-plated. It's black with a nice brushed finish, that would have looked quite good had it not been for the aforementioned orange accents. It does pick up fingerprints and smudges very easily.

When you flip the lid up, you'll see an orange border around the trackpad and another ROG logo on the keyboard deck. While these are thankfully not illumated, it shouldn't come as any surprise that Asus has outfitted this laptop with RGB keyboard backlighting. There's a lot of black plastic around the screen and keyboard, and enough space for a full-sized number pad.

DSC 0454 291017 231001 2007 asus rog

The island-style keys rise out of the surrounding plastic. The space bar is exaggerated and the power button is placed in the upper right corner. The arrow keys are slightly offset so that they're easy to find by feel alone. They're smaller than usual, but thankfully they aren't all squashed into one line. The WASD keys have translucent sides to make their backlighting more prominent, but there's so much bleed from around all the keys that it doesn't make any difference.

Backlighting can be controlled through the ROG Gaming Center app which has its own shortcut key above the numpad. There are four zones, and you can set individual colours for each as well as choose between always-on and a breathing rhythm. There are only three brightless levels despite the brightness slider moving in increments of 1 percent. We couldn't find any way to disable the annoying red flashing pattern that kicks in when the laptop goes to sleep. This is much less control than we've seen on Asus graphics cards, motherboards and desktop PCs, and we've pointed out Asus' lack of consistency before.

We like the fact that the Strix GL553V's lid isn't flexible at all, which means there was no distortion on the screen when we tried to bend and twist it. The hinge also felt solid, and the lid didn't wobble at all when shaking the laptop or typing.

On the left side, you'll find a power inlet, Ethernet port, HDMI video output, two USB 3.0 Type-A and one Type-C port, and a single 3.5mm audio socket. On the right, there's only a DVD-RW drive, a Kensington lock slot and one USB 2.0 port. The speakers and an SD card slot are positioned beneath the front lip of the laptop's lower half, completely out of sight. The heatsink fins visible through the vents on the left, the speaker grilles in front and the rubber legs on the bottom are all the same orange colour as the lid highlights.

The battery is sealed in and there's nothing to see on the bottom other than a small sticker with regulatory information and a tiny Asus logo.

DSC 0463c 290917 230955 4755 asus rog

Asus ROG Strix GL553V specifications and software
There are four variants of this laptop, priced starting at Rs. 94,990. We're reviewing the top-end configuration which costs Rs. 1,36,990. For this money, you get an Intel 'Kaby Lake' Core i7-7700HQ processor, which has four cores with Hyper-Threading and runs at between 2.8GHz and 3.8GHz. The other star of this show is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti GPU with 4GB of dedicated video RAM.

There's a healthy 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a 256GB SATA SSD as well as a 1TB hard drive. That combination will let you boot and load games quickly while still having enough space for loads of media. The screen is a 1920x1080-pixel IPS panel, which Asus says can reproduce 72 percent of the NTSC colour gamut.

For connectivity, there's Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi ac, and Bluetooth 4.0. All three USB ports on the left operate at 5Gbps, which means that even the Type-C port doesn't support USB 3.1 speed. Still, it should be convenient over the years. There's only one HDMI video output - we would have liked a DisplayPort as well. We aren't sure if anyone will ever need to use the 8X DVD-RW drive, but it's still there.

Asus claims that it is using a high-performance cooling system, but there's no support for overclocking in its software. The only thing you can do is push the fan speed, which might at best allow the CPU and GPU to throttle themselves less aggressively.

One little surprise is that this laptop ships with Windows 10 Home, not Pro. It won't make a huge difference to a lot of users, but we expect Pro at this price level. There's a lot of annoying bloatware, including some software that caused repeated intrusive popups. Asus Giftbox is a completely pointless app store with poor navigation and lots of fake entries which are just links to websites which open in your default browser.

DSC 0450 291017 231000 1399 asus rog

Asus ROG GL553V usage and performance
When we first turned our review unit on, we were completely taken aback by how loud its fans were. With absolutely nothing going on and even the Task Manager showing no CPU activity, there was a constant thrum, and if we did anything as simple as opening Windows Explorer, it would immediately ramp up to a roar. Just as we were prepared to call Asus and ask if this was normal behaviour, our usage was interrupted by a forced BIOS update. A window popped up with a large warning sign saying "1 Critical update" and started downloading data, giving us no choice in the matter.

The laptop then rebooted and took us into the BIOS, where the update was applied. At one point it seemed like nothing was happening, but thankfully we waited it out instead of assuming it had crashed. The whole process took about 15 minutes and required no intervention on our part, but we can't help but wonder how buyers would react to their systems suddenly behaving like this. Not everyone is familiar with a PC's BIOS, let alone the precautions needed when flashing it. This is an extremely sensitive process and any interruption can result in a permanently bricked machine.

After this, the fans immediately began behaving themselves. They became audible only when anything actually demanding was happening, but the noise was still extremely distracting. We like the fact that Asus recognised this problem and deployed a solution, but we think it could have been handled a lot better, and no end user should have to deal with this.

With that hiccup behind us, we set about getting a feel of the Strix GL553V, running all our benchmarks, and of course playing lots of games. The screen can get pretty bright, and viewing angles are good. Colours could have been a bit punchier if the screen was glossy, but we're happy with the choice of a non-reflective finish. 1080p and higher-resolution videos looked great.

The Strix GL553V has very powerful speakers. The sound is loud and clear, but not very rich. It's great for dialogue in movies and games, and multiple people can enjoy watching whatever you are. However, there's no warmth and no bass, which makes music of any kind sound tinny and harsh.

Our benchmark tests showed that there's quite a lot of power under the hood, but some results were unexpected. Cinebench R15 gave us a decent enough 706 in its CPU test but failed to run the GPU-based OpenGL test. POVRay rendered its benchmark in 4 minutes, 17 seconds, which is nearly twice as long as the very similarly configured MSI GP62 7RD Leopard Pro took. PCMark gave us 3956, 4828 and 3431 in its Home, Creative and Work tests respectively which were slightly below the Leopard Pro's scores. On the other hand, the scores of 2,391 and 3,510 in 3DMark's Time Spy and Fire Strike Ultra tests were quite a bit higher than what MSI's competitor managed.

We averaged 43.4fps in Unigine Valley, running at 1920x1080 with the High quality preset. Star Swarm gave us a pretty good 50.27fps. We also ran through a few synthetic benchmarks built into games. Rise of the Tomb Raider gave us 53.56fps at its High preset and 43.64fps at the Very High preset, using the laptop's native 1920x1080 resolution. Ashes of the Singularity managed to pump out 42.8fps and 30.3fps using the Standard and Extreme presets respectively, using DirectX 12.

ROG Strix GL553V ROTTR high 1080 2017 03 30 02 50 23 73 Time ROG Strix GL553V

Moving on to manual run-throughs, we measured quality in terms of frames per second as well as frame pacing, which gives us a picture of how consistent performance is rather than only looking at one average which might mask extreme variations. We ran Rise of the Tomb Raider at its High preset and as the graph shows quite clearly, there were massive variations in frame timings. While the average frame rate of 44fps looks smooth and the average time of 22.7ms is good, pacing was unven throughout, with the 99th percentile time nearly double that at 42.7ms. We then ran Far Cry 4 at its High preset and found that it performed a lot better. The average frame rate was 61fps and pace was 16.3ms, with a fairly tightly packed graph showing only minor variance.

ROG Strix GL553V FarCry4 high 1080 2017 03 30 03 07 25 50 Time ROG Strix GL553V

Battery life was quite disappointing. We found that this laptop died in less than four hours when used for casual Web surfing, a bit of video streaming and general productivity. It lasted longer when we were just playing video files, possibly thanks to Kaby Lake's low-energy video playback capabilities. Our CPU and graphics-intensive Battery Eater Pro test ran for just 49 minutes.

Verdict
Asus is one of the only companies that sells a whole range of gaming laptops in India, and we've tested several of them over the years. We've seen some practical models and some truly outlandish ones, and what's clear is that Asus knows how to reach different kinds of buyers.

The ROG Strix GL553V ditches the familiar and reassuring Asus brand for something much younger and more aggressive. As a product, it reflects this with its brash styling and overall lack of finesse. This is not a laptop that wants to be slim or sleek, even if it could be. Everything about it is loud - figuratively and literally.

However, even if you do see yourself as someone who would like to flaunt that kind of image, it might be worth checking out the lower-priced variants and even some competing products. MSI's GP62 7RD Leopard Pro, which we reviewed just a short while ago, has a smaller SSD and weaker GeForce GTX 1050 GPU, but sells for a significant Rs. 30,000 less.

Price (MRP): Rs. 1,36,990

Huawei MediaPad T3 7 Approved By FCC With A Few More Specs Revealed In The Process

The papers for the FCC approval of the Huawei MediaPad T3 7 was published yesterday, and the approval brought with it some more information of the specs too, and what we can expect.

The good thing is that this is a new 7-inch Android tablet, since new 7-inch Android tablets are far between these days. Huawei has named it both Huawei MediaPad T3 7 and Huawei MediaPad T3 7.0, with the internal code name “Baggio2” and the model number BG2-W09.

From before we have already written that it has been officially listed with Android 6.0, dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi cover, and Bluetooth 4.2. But at least new specs revealed also includes a 3000 mAh battery and a GPS sensor, and we get to see the illustrations for it as well, with the holes in the casing for the speaker.

The edges of the tablet are square on top and round at the bottom, so it will be fun to watch it that materialize on this tablet.

Huawei MediaPad T3 7

Huawei MediaPad T3 7

An 8-inch version of the new MediaPad T3 series have also leaked, and so have a few other Huawei mobile devices, and even a new Windows 10 Huawei Matebook. So Huawei have enough unannounced mobile products piled up by now to have their own large press show in a not too distant future.

The market is also screaming for a new 7-inch Android tablet. The globally most popular 7-inch Android tablet in Q1 2017, apart from the not-really-Android $49 Amazon Fire tablet, is the Asus ZenPad C 7.0. And although it is a well put together tablet, with a generally smooth browser and some appeal, it is powered by an Intel Atom x3 Sofia processor, and has a 1024 x 600 resolution display.

Pre-release benchmark may confirm Snapdragon 835 inside HTC U, battery size also rumored

Not that we had any reason to doubt Evan Blass of @evleaks and VentureBeat fame after reliably exposing so many unreleased phones, including the Galaxy S8 and S8+ most recently, but if you needed more proof the HTC U, aka Ocean, is indeed right around the corner, AnTuTu lends the rumor further credence.

A preliminary benchmarking record of a somewhat cryptic HTC CBP device essentially rehashes all the important specifications revealed the other day, from a Snapdragon 835 scene stealer to Quad HD screen resolution, Android 7.1.1 Nougat software, 12MP rear-facing camera, 16MP selfie shooter, 4GB RAM, and 64GB base internal storage.

That still sounds awfully similar to the recently launched U Ultra, save for a substantially upgraded Qualcomm processor, and most likely, a slightly smaller display with the same 2560 x 1440 pixel count and improved resulting density.

Of course, the absolute highlight of the HTC U, which may still be called HTC 11 to minimize 2017 branding confusion, is reportedly a groundbreaking technology dubbed Edge Sense, allowing users to customize gestures for various actions and ways of interaction.

Lastly, we’re hearing from another fairly credible source that HTC Ocean (HTC U) battery capacity will be “equal to 3000mAh.” Bizarre wording aside, the number isn’t too bad, since the larger U Ultra also packs a 3000mAh cell.

Samsung Gear VR with Controller launches soon at $129 total, $39 buys you just the controller

Mobile-based virtual reality has left us with a somewhat middling impression: it’s the future for sure, but it’s not exactly too fun to deal with right now. Be it with the whole idea of having to place your phone that’s pinging notifications at your face in front of your face or the fact that manufacturers haven’t paired controllers to their headset experiences yet, the idea seems half-baked.

Samsung took an initial step towards fixing that controller bit by announcing the Gear VR with Controller earlier on at MWC 2017, but gave us little else to go on in terms of a worldwide domination. Yes, the just-announced Galaxy S8 and S8+ will support this thing as well as the major Samsung mobile flagships from the S6 and later.

The headset itself gives users a 101° field of view and weighs in at 345 grams. The controller, which features a clicky touchpad and trigger along with a very important volume control, runs on two AAA batteries and should last a use cycle of about 40 days if you use it for 2 hours every day. We’re not exactly sure how practical it would be to carry around that controller in your backpack or purse in addition to the headset, but that’s a question you’ll ask for yourself if you choose to consider this product.

The Gear VR with Controller will be available April 21 for $129, which seems fair. Even better, the controller can be purchased alone for $39 if you want to combine it with an existing Gear VR. And Oculus has a nice surprise for mobile virtual reality enthusiasts too, rebuilding its Home “from the ground up” in what’s billed the company’s biggest platform update yet.

A whopping 70 new titles with controller support are coming soon, including 20 in April, and there’s even an Oculus Browser now to surf the web in VR.

Rollout Of Windows 10 Creators Update Starts Globally On April 11

Microsoft announced today that the free Windows 10 Creators Update will start to roll out globally on April 11.

The Windows 10 Creators Update was unveiled at the October 26 Microsoft event, and have been undergoing testing and previews ever since then.

The Creators Update is mainly focused around a few key areas. The first one is improving and adding to 3D user experiences both in gaming, personal creations, and VR uses. The Paint program that has been around onthe Windows OS for ages will become Paint 3D from now on, so people can easily create 3D illustrations or representations. And these can be printed on a 3D printer too or shared with others.

Additional 3D features and VR features will be added later this year, and cheap VR gear is coming from Microsoft partners such as Acer, Lenovo, Asus, and Oculus. Along with more easily accessible, sort of “Amazon Fire” type of customer service, as well as messaging services.

Secondly it offers improvements on the security side with new security features and privacy features, as well as a more intuitive overview of these controls through the dashboard of the new Windows Defender Security Center.

The Windows 10 Creators Update will also add a few new features to the Edge browser from new ways of organizing tabs, to lower power consumption, which is claimed to increase battery life on tablets and computers quite a bit.

A blue light filter called Night Lite is also included with the update, with good controls of it too. Another feature is the Mini View that lets users keep an app/window open on top of theoretically anything else that may be running.

And among some of the gaming and Xbox features, is the Xbox Play anywhere feature that will now let bought Xbox games be played on Windows 10 tablets and computers too.

Complete Samsung Galaxy S8 handbook crops up at the last minute to fill in the blanks

We know you must have grown tired of all the Galaxy S8 information spills by now, and you probably just want the whole thing to be over already, but allow us to squeeze one final leak into your lives before the actual Unpacked event kicks off later today in New York and London simultaneously.

It’s a biggie, mind you, and although it mainly rehashes features, specifications and capabilities that haven’t been a secret for a long time, it also adds some fresh details to the mix. The complete Samsung Galaxy S8 handbook was uploaded to the company’s official download center, where it’s password-protected now, revealing among others exactly how Bixby will enrich your “intelligent life.”

You can check out setup instructions at the source link below, as well as discover how the voice assistant takes commands and interacts with users, including a neat little function called “Hello Bixby” that serves up “frequently updated content in one place”, plus Bixby Vision, an image search feature looking mighty helpful on paper.

The exhaustive user guide also confirms and describes iris recognition technology, Infinity Display marketing, that divisive rear-fitted fingerprint sensor, exciting face-scanning functionality, and Samsung DeX mode for seamless computer convertibility.

Bluetooth Dual audio is worth a bit of attention too, letting you stream music from one Galaxy S8 or S8+ unit to a pair of wireless headsets or speakers simultaneously. Then there’s IP68 water resistance, of course, microSD card support, Samsung Cloud access, Samsung Connect capabilities for easy control and management of TVs, home appliances and IoT products, a “smart” Auto Focus front camera, Samsung Pay, Always On Display, Multi window, and Edge screen functions. So, yeah, it’s all there for the world to see hours ahead of the formal announcement.

Windows 10 Creators Update's Final Build Said to Be Available for Download

Microsoft's expected to release the Windows 10 Creators Update soon, as early as next month. Now, a new report indicates that the Redmond giant has already made the final build of the update available to Windows Insider Preview members.

Windows 10 build 15603, now rolling out to Windows 10 Insider Preview members on both the fast and slow rings, is the final release to manufacturing (RTM) build, The Verge reports. It will reportedly be made available to general users next month, with the release speculated to be on April 11 - Microsoft's scheduled Patch Tuesday for the month.

Neowin has helpfully shared the setup ISO files and made them available to download and install, in case you don't want to wait or register for the Insider Preview programme. You can download the 64-bit ISO file here, and the 32-bit ISO file here. You'll need to mount the file and then run the setup.exe file, or, can choose to run a clean install via a bootable DVD or flash drive

The Verge goes on to add that though Microsoft is expected to release further updates after the Windows 10 Creators Update, they will be released as cumulative updates with build number 15063.xxxx via Windows Update. The same build number will also be released for the Xbox One update, the report claims.

The company has previously said it will be more transparent about these smaller updates, so that users do not have to reboot many times after upgrading to Windows 10 Creators Update.

The Windows 10 Creators Update will enable anyone to create, share and experience in 3D and mixed reality, connect people faster to those they care about most, and empower every gamer to be a broadcaster. The Creators Update will also include a new Game Mode, 3D Paint, mixed reality headsets support, a picture-in-picture mode, and improvements to Microsoft Edge's tab mode.

Android One’s Y!mobile S2 gets Pixel Launcher “lite” in Android 7.1.1 package

Japanese OEM Y!mobile has an Android One phone called the S2. The Android One program lets Google partner with local manufacturers make standardized hardware with standardized and quickly updated software.

Even though Android 7.1.2 betas are circulating for certain Nexus and Pixel C users, there’s a little discrepancy going on here: those receiving the Android 7.1.1 update for the S2 are getting some form of the Pixel Launcher.

There’s no app drawer icon, just the hinted slide mechanism on the launcher. The drawer doesn’t have a recently used bar of apps, but it does have a search bar. There’s no Google lozenge at the main screen’s head and there’s no date and weather. But it’s definitely Pixel-like.

The update was temporarily stopped on Friday, the same day it went. We’re not sure when the blast continues and we’re not even sure if other Android One phones are getting similar updates.

Keyboards For Teclast Tbook X5 Pro And Chuwi Hi13 Windows 2-In-1’s Available

Razer launches refreshed Blade Pro with THX support, Kaby Lake processors

Razer’s Razer Blade Pro has been the company’s go-to high-end machine for gamers wanting a desktop replacement, and the company has tweaked its high-end configuration for 2017. The jumps aren’t huge, but the new system will offer a Kaby Lake Core i7-7820HQ (2.9GHz base, 3.9GHz Turbo) as opposed to the older i7-6820HQ (2.7GHz base, 3.6GHz Turbo). It also ships with DDR4-2667 instead of DDR4-2133.

The other major claim to fame for this laptop is its support for THX. To achieve that, the Razer Blade Pro had to meet certain standards for color resolution, color accuracy, and video playback (on the video side). The audio jack on the Razer Blade Pro also had to be certified for THX, which means conforming to that standard’s guidelines for crosstalk, distortion, frequency response, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

As for the rest of the features, the Razer Blade Pro comes with a GTX 1080, a 17.3-inch IGZO 4K display with G-Sync support, multiple SSD storage options (all, however, appear to be RAID 0), 32GB of DDR4, and Ethernet and wireless support provided by Killer Wireless. Thunderbolt 3 and 3x USB 3.0 ports are also included, as is an SDXC reader. The only downside, inevitably, is the price. With a price tag starting at $4,000, you’re definitely staring down the barrel of some very expensive hardware.

Razer claims that you can overclock the CPU core to 4.3GHz by enabling “High Performance Mode,” but we’re dubious of how well this will work in practice. In a mobile form factor, overclocking a laptop part is more likely to lead to sustained throttling with minimal long-term performance boosts compared with running a longer time at a lower turbo clock. We’re not saying Razer‘s solution doesn’t work, but boutique laptops often advertise aggressive specs for clock speeds they can’t actually reach or can only hold for very short periods of time.

It’s also worth noting that Razer is putting a substantial premium on this hardware, even relative to other boutiques. The Razer Blade is $1,900 for a base 14-inch laptop, when other hardware is available from mainstream manufacturers like Asus or MSI with similar specs for significantly less money. Razer may claim features like THX compatibility, but I’d frankly recommend waiting for hardware reviews before paying this much for a laptop. At an estimated 7.69 pounds, this isn’t exactly a lightweight system, either. That’s not bad for a desktop replacement, but it’s more “transportable” than “portable” by modern standards.

Apple's India Manufacturing Demands Will Be Looked at After GST Rollout: Sitharaman

Commerce and Industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said Amercian phone-maker Apple's demand for tax incentives to set up a manufacturing unit in the country will have to be looked at after the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is rolled out.

"GST will be coming soon. So, tax-related incentives demanded by Apple will have to be looked from a different angle," Sitharaman told PTI on the sidelines of Chemexcil function in Mumbai.

Apple Tax Incentive Demand Said to Have Been Turned Down by Revenue Department

The government has not accepted most of the demands of the iPhone maker, she added.

Apple plans to set up a manufacturing unit in Bengaluru this year, where it will assemble its products, probably only iPhone 6 and 6s models, according to reports in a section of the media.

The American tech giant has sought various concessions on taxation and import of components for setting up the unit.

The Cupertino-based technology giant currently manufactures in China and Brazil.

Apart from tax sops, Apple also wants relaxation in the mandated 30 percent local sourcing of components. Earlier reports had said the company would be importing all its components on the grounds that it is bringing in cutting-edge technology to the country.

Apple also wants to open a fully-owned retail outlets in the country.

In January, Apple had indicated to the government that it was ready with a blueprint to begin manufacturing iPhones, but wants fiscal concessions, including Customs duty waiver on imported components.

March Tablet Deals On Android, Windows, And Remix Tablets And 2-In-1’s

Here are the March tablet deals going on right now, that are anything from bargains to just plain interesting stories, like the $6 discount on the Asus ZenPad 3S 10.

Asus Transformer Mini (T102HA)
The 10.1-inch Surface-like 2-in-1 tablet from Asus is still on sale after Pi Day, for just $249, with the keyboard and pen included. This is a good and popular tablet, and fairly new too, so it’s surprising to see it this cheap. Asus Transformer Mini runs Windows 10 and has a 10.1-inch screen with a 1280 x 800 resolution display with active pen support, and it’s powered by a Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Also has a very long 11 hour battery life, built-in kickstand, ac Wi-Fi cover, USB 3.0, a rear fingerprint reader, and precision touchpad on the keyboard.

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S
Is also on sale now that the predecessor Samsung Galaxy Book is coming in April for $1000.
The 12-inch Samsung Galaxy TabPro S meanwhile features a Super AMOLED display with 2160 x 1440 resolution, a 6th gen. Intel Core m3 processor, 128GB of storage, 4GB of RAM, complete Wi-Fi cover, pen support, and a very slim exterior of under 7 mm in thickness.

Huawei MateBook
The main competitor for the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S is also on sale in March for under $540 with included keyboard and otherwise identical main hardware specs to those of the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S.

Acer Switch Alpha 12
The first tablet where Acer really nailed it for the first time in years, with its innoative cooling system. Somewhat similar to the Huawei MateBook and Samsung Galaxy TabPro S because of the 2160 x 1440 resolution display, 128GB storage, and 4GB of RAM, but more powerful with its Intel Core i3 processor, and it even has a USB 3.1 Type-C port, along with a built-in kickstand. So it has some Surface influence in it too.

Asus ZenPad 3S 10
After Samsung released the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, Asus had to try and compete on price alone, so now this 9.7-inch Android 6.0 have been cut by $6 for the black/grey version, and $4 for the white/silver version. That’s sure not much, but then again, I suppose we have to take into consideration that the Asus ZenPad 3S 10 is already a very cheap tablet.

Teclast Tbook 16 Power
The most powerful Intel Atom tablet in the world is on sale until March 30 for $345.
It runs both Android 6.0 and WIndows 10, is powered by a Intel Atom x7-Z8750processor, has 8GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, an 11.6-inch screen with Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 7 hour battery life, as well as USB 3.0 and USB Type-C ports.

Teclast P80h
A $55 8-inch Android 5.1 alternative to the $49 Fire tablet, with specs at the same level. So that means 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a MediaTek MT8163 processor, similar to some of Amazon’s tablets, but surprisingly this tablet also has dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi and GPS. But this is obviously not a powerful tablet by today’s standards.

Teclast X80 Plus
$79 for this 8-inch Windows 10 tablet and Android 5.1 tablet in one, is the cheapest I’ve ever seen. Gets its performance from a quad-core Intel Atom x5-Z8300 “Cherry Trail” processor, 2GB of RAM, with 32GB of storage and 128GB microSD card suport.

The most luxurious tech at the Luxury Technology Show

We stopped by The Luxury Technology Show in Manhattan, New York the other night to see some of the technology products that are being marketed to the wealthy people around who really want something special and unique. We’re focusing on the smartphones and mobile technology products that were in attendance, but there were also special speakers, home automation equipment, home entertainment systems, electric guitars, virtual reality systems, micro-foam beer makers, robotic grill cleaners, espresso machines, pet cameras, and an LED bed.

Sirin Labs’ Solarin

This phone’s most impressive quality is its price tag.  At almost $17,000, you’re looking at something that very few people will spend the money on.

Sirin Solarin

The Sirin Solarin costs about $16,666, but it comes in red.

Sirin Solarin

It’s not exactly a thin and light phone, but it includes a 4,000mAh battery, 1440p IPS LCD display, 4GB of RAM, & 128GB storage.

Sirin Solarin

It runs Android, just like the $10 Alcatel GoPhone I have.

Sirin Solarin

A switch on the back lets you go to super secure mode which uses KoolSpan chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption which only works for phone calls and text messages.

Sirin Solarin

It’s also available in black or green and comes in a big protective suitcase.

The Turing Phone

If the Solarin Phone isn’t quite your style, Turing Robotics Industries is working on the Turing Phone Appassionato, an Amplified Intelligence Android mobile phone. It will be made from Liquidmorphium alloy with “diamond like carbon” coating. The Turing Phone Appassionato that is due for distribution by September 2017, but in the meantime, you can take a look at the original Turing Phone which they did have on display.

Turing Phone

The Dark Wyvern Glaedr Limited Edition Turing Phone boasts an extremely unique design.

Turing Phone

The Dark Wyvern Flagship Edition looks good too.

Turing Phone

The original Turing Phone actually runs Sailfish OS, which is naturally more secure than Android and, I’d say, more luxurious… unless you want to run a million apps on it.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry was once a staple among the luxury markets, and their new BlackBerry KeyONE was well represented at the Luxury Technology Show.

BlackBerry KeyONE

The BlackBerry KeyONE is a very nice phone even if it doesn’t have gold accents.

Miscellaneous

While we were focusing on the smartphones above, of course there were other interesting technology products at the Luxury Technology Show.

Tesla Model X SUV

Yes, a gull-wing Tesla Model X SUV counts as luxury tech.

Aiptek iBeamBLOCK

The Aiptek iBeamBLOCK is a stackable Windows 10 tablet PC and projector. The first 0.5″ top piece is the PC, below that is a projector, and the 3rd piece is extra battery power.

Smartphone 3D Printer

Here’s the first portable Smartphone 3D Printer. It doesn’t print smartphones though. You put a smartphone inside it and the phone’s screen is what’s used for positioning the printing heads.

Sol Republic Amps Air

Sol Republic’s Amps Air wireless headphones are much more attractive than Apple’s AirPods.

Nintendo Expects To Sell 110 Million Switch Tablet Consoles

Moto G5 Plus up for pre-orders, sales begin March 31

It’s a week out from the end of March and the Moto G5 Plus is on for US pre-orders for the next week. The phone comes in gold and gray colors in 2GB RAM/32GB storage and 4/64GB configurations for $229.99 and $299.99, respectively.

You can grab the phone at the typical third-party suspects like Best Buy, Newegg and B&H Photo. Remember that the phone will work on all major carriers.

Here’s a little tip: if you sit around on the Motorola site after adding your phone into the cart, you’ll be able to grab 5 percent off your order. Financing is also available, too. Unfortunately, we pulled up an April 11 ship date on the phone, so be prepared to fight your patience for a few bucks off.

In the meantime, Android Central has pulled up the first-load home screen for the device and is questioning why Allo continues to get the shaft in favor of Android Messages while Duo gets special limelight, wedged away from the default “Google” folder between the Moto and Play Store apps.

Well, you can go ahead and question Google’s attitude toward how it approaches texting and chat between its three perceived audiences, but the sad fact of things is that it is what it is.

Let’s settle this – fingerprint sensor on the back, or on the front?

Ok people, let put it all out there. Right here, right now. I know you’re probably an advocate for one or the other, so this is your moment. This is what I’ve been training you for all this time. This could potentially be the most polarizing topic in Weekend Debate history so you are going to have to defend yourselves. We need to decide, once and for all, which is better – fingerprint sensor on the front, or fingerprint sensor on the back?

I mean, where do we even start with this? At the beginning of course. This all started with the fingerprint sensor being on the front of the phone. Apple’s TouchID was arguably the point at which fingerprint sensors became a thing. Yes, I know that others did it first, but come on. Apple put fingerprint sensors on the map, and they started on the front of the device. This made sense in a lot of different ways.

Nexus 5X Fingerprint ScannerYou’re holding it…right

Most people hold their phone supported on the bottom of the phone. This necessarily means that their fingers are there as well. This puts the thumb right in the spotlight for some quick access to the phone. You’re touching the button with your thumb anyway to turn on the phone, so while you’re there, you can unlock it as well. Apple trained us for years how to turn on a phone, so that’s where fingerprint sensors started. It was all part of the societally ingrained action required to start using a phone.

Plus, when a phone is lying on its back on a table – as one might do when using a phone with occupied hands, the fingerprint sensor is still accessible in the natural viewing position of the phone. Fingerprint sensors on the back require you to pick up and handle the phone in order to unlock via the fingerprint sensor. Putting it on the front allow you to simply lay a finger down and have access to all of your contents.

And yet…

But then, phones started getting thinner and the fronts started getting smaller, requiring a migration to the back of the phone for some OEMs. My current daily driver, the Honor 8 follows this pattern. Similar to our argument for the sensor on the front, many people support their phones with fingers on the back. Since their finger is going to be back there anyway, why not put it to use? Muscle memory will have you grabbing your phone and unlocking it as you bring it up to your face, allowing you to access your phone even faster.

Plus, this allows you to have a much more friendly screen to face ratio. The LG G6 recently changed my opinion of bezels on the front of a phone, and those chins – a.k.a. wasted space on either saide of the home button – had to go. By putting the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, you’re making a phone that is more usable with more screen – the best of both worlds. This isn’t possible if you still need to have a circle or rounded rectangle at the bottom of the phone. The back is unused real estate that should be tapped.

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium fingerprint scannerAnd yet again…

But let’s not forget about one more location – the side of the phone. Sony phones have been putting fingerprint sensors on the side of the phone. Side mounted don’t mar the face or the back of a phone. Having the fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone allows you to see where the sensor is, while at the same time keeping it out of the way. You don’t have to compromise on screen space, nor on feeling around the back of your phone to find the elusive circle.

So, to be fair, I have a favorite. But this isn’t about me. This is about you. Where do you stand in this debate? Front, back, or side? But on this one, you’re going to need to be ready to defend your opinion. Oddly enough, this is a polarizing debate that gets strong supporters on both side? Are you with the old school, front mounters. Perhaps you are a member of the new-school back mounters? Are you one of those free thinkers that wants to have your cake and eat it too? Sound off below in the comments, and make your position clear. Support your arguments, and let’s see if we can figure this out.
