Google devs physically testing Walleye Pixel 2

Word is that the original Pixel phone was created in the wake of Google blowing up 2016’s Nexus project, leaving only nine months between the company and HTC to design, produce and ship the devices. Meanwhile, rumors for three upcoming Pixel devices say that HTC gets the contract once again, but one thing is for sure: Google has more time to think this project through.

Google’s hardware chief, Rick Osterloh, has committed on the record to keeping this train on a tick-tock track, which would line up another hardware release this October. That makes this discovery, first picked up by SlashGear, very reassuring for the qualitative fate of the Pixel 2.

A Google developer has noted in the Android Open Source Project gerrit that he obtained a “walleye” device for testing a toggle. The “walleye” is one of three fishy codenames for the next generation of Pixel devices and would seemingly refer to the smallest one. The other two are “muskie” and “taimen”.

There’s no sense of how far along that device has gotten in its process, but the good news is that Google has some R&D breathing room — it didn’t just decide to start thinking about the next Pixels.

But the major hope is that with this time, we’re able to see more quality assurance to keep all the naughty build imperfections out of the way and that we see more units produced so that people can actually buy the things.

That said, if Google surprises us all with a hardware launch at the I/O conference (really a software event, but it’s had some interesting jackets and failed modular phone atempts…) this month, well, good luck.

Top 10 Popular New Windows 10 Apps In April

Surface tablets were surveyed as topping customer satisfaction among tablets in 2017, ahead of Apple’s iPads even. And with Windows 10 being a great OS on tablets, here is a look at the top 10 popular new Windows 10 apps of April.

Gangstar New Orleans: Open World
Sure, even on Windows 10 computers and tablets, games still have a tendency to become the most popular app, in this case a criminal enterprise game in New Orleans.

Telegram Desktop
Telegram Messenger have now been launched as an app in Windows store, so that makes it one of of the most popular new apps at the moment, but it still lacks mobile/tablet features in the April version, so hopefully that will be in place soon.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series
Be aware that this is a large app at around 3.7GB for this game, which is also an indication of the features and graphics within too.

Dolby Access
Dolby Access has been added as an app so people can set up and experience Dolby Atmos, but only on headphones or home theater.

Labyrinth Trap
Labyrinth Trap is a a well suited game for Windows 10 tablets since you can use the accelerometer to balance and navigat the ball through the maze.

Enter The Gungeon
Enter The Gungeon has more than just a pun for a name, and even retro graphics in what is defined as a gunfight dungeon crawler.

Faces of Illusion: The Twin Phantoms
A new hidden bobject puzzle game with an adventure theme, featuring 30 locations and 21 mini-games.

MediaTag
Definitely a utility tool this, and only free for a short while. This Windows apps lets you change meta data in files, and in batches too.

Wall Graffiti
If Snapchat filters are too last year, then this app offers a different kind of filter to get the cred back.

ABC Spelling – Spell & Phonics
Children’s games are very popular on tablets, and this one is a useful alphabet learning game that even sounds out words, letters, and lets kids associate letters with pictures.

Where should the fingerprint sensor go on the next iPhone?

This year could be a pretty cool year, if you’re an Apple fan. Rumors are circulating about an iPhone is basically an edge-to-edge, top-to-bottom device that is screen, all screen, and nothing but a screen. It’s compelling. LG and Samsung have already come pretty darn close. Can Apple cross the finish line? That remains to be seen. But what, then, would happen to arguably one of the most iconic parts of the iPhone – the home button/fingerprint sensor? That’s what we’re here to talk about.

Unlike most of our debates, this isn’t a binary choice. It’s not A or B. There are a few different options to consider, and I’m going to do my best to lay those out for you here. What should Apple do with that home button and fingerprint sensor that has been gracing the front of every phone and tablet it has produced in the past 10 years? It’s not an easy decision – not by any stretch.

Keep it right there

The first option is of course to keep it right where it is. Sure, an edge-to-edge screen would be killer – and a device whose face was all screen would be absolutely luxurious. But this is the squircle we’re talking about here. Sure, the button is just round these days, but getting rid of the button would be a major departure from the most basic design component left on the iconic phone. Evolution has to happen, right? Maybe. But maybe we’re not there yet either.

Of course, we could just make the button smaller, and more Galaxy S7 like. Keeping the home button with a rounded rectangle shape might be a decent way to go, allowing for a much more extensive screen, while retaining that design element. Might be a touch too ironic though for the company that has been suing Samsung for years now to suddenly steal its home button.

Underneath the skin

I’m inclined to think that if the screen is as extensive as rumors suggest, then that home button is toast. So what’s left? There are numerous companies – including Apple – that are working on embedding the fingerprint sensor below the front glass. This kind of sensor would obviously allow for the fingerprint sensor to remain, along with an Android-like home button that is software driven. Heck, the lock screen could even have an image that depicts the famed home button to wake the phone up when needed. Plus, there’s other tech out there that would allow for the entire screen to be a fingerprint sensor.

Or, Apple could take a page from other Android OEMs and mount its home button/sensor on the back of the device. Wouldn’t that be something to see? A rear-mounted fingerprint sensor makes a lot of sense – your fingers end up there anyway, especially with a screen as extensive as is rumored. Plus, Apple relies very heavily on its home button – too heavily if you ask me – so it’ll need some way to keep that functionality going.

Kill it with fire

There is one last option on Apple’s menu – kill it completely. Samsung has shown that phones can be unlocked in a variety of ways – fingerprint, facial recognition, iris scanning. It’s all pretty solid, and if I know Apple, it will get those methods down to a science. It’ll be “automagical and stuff”. I don’t doubt that Apple is capable of making biometric security pretty close to bulletproof, because it would have to be. But these are not waters in which Apple has dipped its toe yet, so it would be a huge risk. But maybe it would be worth it.

That’s assuming these rumors are even close to true. This is another way that this debate is a little different – it’s all theoretical. But we’ve had some heavy discussions of late, so maybe we can be a little lighter on this one. What do you think will ultimately happen to Apple’s home button and fingerprint sensor? Will it wind up on the back of the device? Perhaps it will be smaller? Will Apple stubbornly hold on to it come hell or high water? Will Apple kill the whole thing in favor of other biometrics? Sound off below with your thoughts. If you have any other ideas on what it could do, include those as well. All options are on the table, so let’s see if we can figure this out.

How the iPhone 8 can fail at copying the Galaxy S8

What can Apple call success these days?

Is it a retail popularity contest (that it lost to Android long ago)? Nah, it’s a little superficial. Only a little superficial — no, what it really needs is to maintain the brand’s street cache of being the go-to technology that few actually need, but that everyone has to respect for one reason or another.

Ah, Macs.

But when it comes to the iPhone, does padding out hardware revenues on a big upgrade to trigger a “supercycle” of customers that have been hiding in caves for so long to buy a shinier, newer phone sound like a good idea? Is it all for a new earnings record or two? Proving that it can still master the vertical it has held for nine years as it has extracted the most financial success that any mortal has ever seen? Gosh, you’re getting it now.

Importantly to us, is it fair to judge Apple in narrow, enthusiast terms to sate our inferiority complex? Like, “A11 vs. Snapdragon 835” and “SO MUCH RAM“? The overall sentiment I’m getting from the Pocketnow community is that whatever Apple wants to do this fall, doing it “better” won’t validate it from “copying” Samsung’s hardware styling for the Galaxy S8. And from the factory scratchings and analyst yarns we’ve been covering, it seems like we’re due for “The Battle of the Eights”. By the way, we should look into trademarking that phrase for our comparison coverage.

Reminder: an iPhone is not made out of playing cards. You don’t magically pull one out or change an ace to a “2” to have everything suddenly fall apart. And yet, the goals that Apple wants to achieve with a given iPhone will endlessly differ, evolve, devolve between the years.

With that in mind, it’s these factors being the investors, the competition and Apple that are brewing up, in my view, a storm that could end up disenfranchising savvy consumers that, for one reason or another, will say that great isn’t good enough. They want the best.

Some of the things that Apple is reportedly trying to achieve that Samsung could not — such as an on-screen Touch ID sensor, a dual-camera system and an OLED display curving on all four sides — may fail to get on the iPhone 8, at least as ideally envisioned. The rut of R&D and production hell for some of its major components will displace design elements that will make the iPhone 8 an even more foreign departure from what the iPhone 7 was.

Sure, crack your jokes at how Chief Designer Officer Jony Ive will play limbo if things fall out, but it does put Tim Cook with some hand wringing as well: should familiar features or those with a fair expectation to be present in the iPhone 8 be abandoned in place of untested alternatives?

You shouldn’t compare the chance of the complete removal of Touch ID to the omission of the headphone jack from the iPhone 7. In addition to advancing the technical and qualitative fields in the audio front, it also had financial upside it could ride with the switch to Lightning-connected headphones. If the on-screen fingerprint sensing technology can’t be implemented by prime time, will we be able to consistently rely on, say, a 3D facial scanner to authenticate access into our iPhone 8 devices? There’s a downside to errors and, at best, perseverance of status quo if a successful interchange happens.

If screens are designed to “pop” like corn, will most shoppers that have historically been on Apple’s side be able to hold a Galaxy S8 and an iPhone 8 in their hands and honestly keep loyal? On paper, a flatter and smaller display on the second machine would pale against a larger display that comes right up against curved glass. And that S8 wouldn’t that much bigger than such an iPhone, either.

With these iffy parts coming in slow and unsteady, this has made all the research and whispering on the iPhone 8 ever so bold: a recent rag claimed that conservative iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models have been shelved, perhaps, in favor of two advanced iPhone 8 models, though we have no intelligence to back that up.

“It’s coming,” the town crier said. “Soon enough, you’ll see.”

If that’s to be, then remind us how this will help Apple net 80 million unit sales if the parts aren’t shipping in as fast as it’d like? Will the company have sunk too much money into these iPhones to even keep these things competitively priced as UBS would like to think? This sure would be a bad time to introduce a $1,000 iPhone to the market when the more topically appealing communicator in the Galaxy S8.

If the bottom falls out on this situation, then Apple will have failed by appending a needless risk in an environment that pressured it to advance its own standards — when on the whole it was just keeping up with the Jonses — while encountering the tightened constraints of its operations.

To rely solely on the iPhone 8, maybe an iPhone 8 Plus, that will stress the supply chain to wits extent to drive revenues is a practice of faith. Business calls faith a fool’s asset.

If by necessity we see major features talked up here missing from the final product at a price we’re just coming to grasp, Tim Cook may not wake up one day late in January with a bright voice for the moneymakers.

If Infinite Loop has a new, exclusive and attractive approach to software or such a service hidden up its sleeve, it’s certainly doing a good job of keeping it hidden. Stickers? You don’t need an iPhone 8 for stickers. A messaging system that just works? Again, you don’t need an iPhone 8. You don’t even freaking need iOS for that crap.  A GIF maker? Please, child, you’re gonna have to come get a license with big media to make it any bit worthwhile. Actually, with Apple locking itself with media types to feed its TV desires, we wouldn’t be surprised if it came to that.

Of course, none of this matters if reality proves friendlier to the corporation. I personally think that we’re not anywhere near such a doomsday prospect, even though I definitely imagined it to be within the realm of possibility.

How far down the road we go is currently of public opinion, though, and we’d like to hear yours.

8-Inch Huawei MediaPad M3 Lite 8.0 Could Also Be In The Works

Ever since the end of March is has been known that Huawei has a Full HD Android 7.0 tablet coming onto the market by the name of Huawei MediaPad M3 Lite 10, which is gradually being listed in store after store these days for around €299 in Europe.

But this week a new official Wi-Fi certification showed that an additional MediaPad M3 Lite tablet is in the works too, and it appears to be a smaller one, perhaps an 8-inch version with the model numbers CPN-W09 and CPN-L09. The only specs that leaked out of the certification was the Android 7.0 OS and 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi cover, which means that the tablet is off to a good start at least.

“Lite” denotes that it is a toned down version of the regular MediaPad M3, as the Huawei MediaPad M3 is an 8.4-inch Android flagship tablet with a high 2560 x 1600 resolution display and 4GB of RAM. The 10.1-inch Huawei MediaPad M3 Lite 10 is listed as a 1920 x 1200 resolution Android 7.0 tablet with 3GB of RAM and a 1.4 GHz octa-core Qualcomm processor.

So if Huawei launches an 8-inch Huawei MediaPad M3 Lite, we should perhaps expect the same level of specs, which should also mean that the price should be less than the $299 that the Huawei MediaPad M3 was launched for, and it would compete with the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 too, which is now the cheapest 8-inch Ful HD tablet that also runs Android 7.0 Nougat.

Acer Predator X27 4K Gaming Monitor With Nvidia G-Sync HDR Launched

HDR display technology is not going to be restricted to televisions alone in 2017 as AMD and Nvidia have both unveiled their respective HDR technology for the PC. Around the time of CES, AMD unveiled its Radeon FreeSync2 technology and amongst various improvements it brings to the table, the biggest has got to be support for HDR. Nvidia wasn’t too far behind either with its G-Sync HDR announcement and on Thursday, at its Next@Acer event in New York, Acer has dropped a brand new Predator X27 monitor in support of this technology. The company also announced a 27-inch curved monitor called Z271UV which covers 125 percent of the sRGB colour space and has a 1800R curved panel. Pricing and availability details have not been announced yet.

Both monitors are treated with a Quantum Dot film, which allows them to achieve a wider, brighter and more accurate colour range and also support Tobii eye-tracking technology. The Predator X27 features a 4K resolution (2160x3840), a refresh rate of 144Hz, 4ms response time and a peak brightness of and impressive 1000nits. It also supports 99 percent of the sRGB colour space and 384 local dimming LED zones for better contrast and deeper black levels. The monitor also features a diamond cut metal stand with tilt, swivel, and height adjustments.

Acer Predator Z271UV acer

The Predator Z271UV features an 1800R curved panel which offers a much more visible curve compared to most curved panels (usually 3000R). Since we sit a lot closer to a PC monitor as compared to a TV, the more pronounced curve should help offer a wider field of view. The monitor also features an edge-to-edge design, which makes it useful for multi-monitor setups. It also boasts of a colour gamut of 125 percent of the sRGB spectrum. It also has a native 3ms response time and a refresh rate that can be pushed to 165Hz. There are two 7W speakers with Acer’s TrueHarmony technology for better audio.

Disclosure: Acer sponsored the correspondent's flights and hotel for the trip to New York for the event.

Acer Predator Triton 700, Helios 300 Slim Form Factor Gaming Laptops Launched

If you want the top-of-the-line gaming hardware in a laptop then you generally need to compromise on the weight and portability aspect. However, Acer hopes to change that perception with its new Triton 700 and Helios 300 gaming laptops. Announced during the Next@Acer global press conference in New York, both laptops feature the company’s new AeroBlade 3D metal blade fans which is said to increase airflow by 35 percent without taking too much space. The Triton 700 will go on sale in the US in August, starting at $2,999 (approximately Rs. 2,03,900) while the Helios 300 will be available starting July at $1,299 (approximately Rs. 88,340).

The Predator Triton 700 is the top-end model, which according to Jerry Hou, General Manager, Consumer Notebooks, is built on the learnings of the Predator 21 X which was first showcased at IFA 2016. Due to the new cooling technology, Acer is able to offer top-end specifications in a chassis that measures 18.9mm in thickness and weight of 2.6kg.

IMAG0197 280617 040640 5484 acer

The laptop has an aluminium body which houses a 15.6-inch full-HD display and is powered a standard-voltage 7th Generation Intel Core i5 or i7 CPUs, Nvidia GeForce GTX 10 series GPUs, up to 32GB of RAM and up to two NVMe PCIe SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration. There’s a Corning Gorilla Glass plate above the keyboard which lets you have a peak at the new cooling solution and the heatpipes, which also doubles up as a trackpad. In terms of connectivity, the laptop has Thunderbolt 3 and Killer Network’s DoubleShot Pro networking for dual 4K video-out support, two USB 3.0 ports, single USB 2.0 port, Gigabit LAN and HDMI 2.0. The Predator Triton 700 also features a mechanical keyboard and RGB backlighting.

The Predator Helios 300 is designed for the more value conscious gamer. The laptop will be available in both 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch form factors with the same cooling solution as its bigger brother. The display resolution for both screen sizes is full-HD. Specifications include a choice of a Core i5 or Core i7 standard voltage 7th Gen Intel CPUs, an overclockable Nvidia GTX 1060 or 1050Ti GPU, up to 16GB of RAM that upgradable to double the amount, and SSD and a regular hard drive for storage. Acer has also fitted a compartment underneath the chassis to make it easy for the user to upgrade memory and storage components. The laptop also has Dolby Audio Premium for better quality audio.

Disclosure: Acer sponsored the correspondent's flights and hotel for the trip to New York for the event.

Reliable source provides clarification and confirmation of Moto E4/E4 Plus spec sheets

There’s no more room for confusion when talking Lenovo’s four upcoming low-end, low-cost Moto-branded Android smartphones, as another trusted source helps fill in the E4 and E4 Plus blanks after the C and C Plus also leaked in full a couple of weeks back.

Rendered as prettier handsets than the entry-level Moto C/C Plus duo, but not quite as sleek and premium-looking as the mid-range G5 and G5 Plus, the Moto E4 and E4 Plus will predictably squeeze right between the two pairs in terms of specifications as well.

No wonder last year’s G4 Play has no direct sequel in the pipeline, with the “regular” E4 reportedly borrowing its 5-inch 720p display, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM (no 1 and 8 gig options this time around), 8 and 5MP camera sensors, and even 2800mAh battery.

So, what’s different, aside from a revised, metal-made design? Android 7.1.1 Nougat will apparently be pre-loaded on the €150 or so 5-incher, with added fingerprint recognition also in tow, a quad-core MediaTek MT6737M processor replacing G4 Play’s Snapdragon 410 silicon, and a good millimeter shaved off the chunky profile.

At “about” €190, the Moto E4 Plus is ready to bump cell size up to a gargantuan 5000mAh, further enhancing screen real estate to 5.5 inches, rear-facing camera resolution to 13 megapixels, and RAM count to 3GB. You’ll probably be offered only 2 gigs for under €200 though, with the 9.55mm-thick device tipped to weigh in at 198 grams.

It’s not easy to squeeze a monster battery into a featherweight phone, mind you.

Acer Switch 5 – “Kaby Lake” Successor To The Acer Switch Alpha 12 Announced – With June Launch

The 12-inch Windows 10 2-in-1 tablet Acer Switch 5 was announced by Acer in New York today. This is the successor to the fanless Acer Switch Alpha 12 launched one year ago. Now Acer have upgraded it to the new 7th gen. Intel Core “Kaby Lake” processors, while kept the fanless LiquidLoop colling system for it.

The new Acer Switch 5 will be released in USA and Canada in June from $799 and upwards, or €1,099 in EMA countries, and finally from 7499 Yuan in China in July.

So, depending on the market there will be choices of Intel Core i3, i5, i7 “Kaby Lake” processors with Intel HD Graphics 620, with 4GB or 8GB of LPDDR3 SDRAM, and options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB of storage.

Acer Switch 5

Acer Switch 5

The 12-inch screen has the same high 2160 x 1440 resolution as before, with Acer Active Pen support, which is a 1024 pressure level sensitive active digitizer which works with Windows Ink.

The built-in kickstand was already well behaved, but have become even more advanced now in the Acer Switch 5 by being auto-retracting so that the kickstand can be adjusted one-handed.

It also supports Windows Hello with a fingerprint reader built into the power button on the side, like we are seeing on a few of the new Windows tablets.

Acer Switch 5 has a 10.5 hour battery life, has a 720p front webcam, stereo speakers with what Acer calls TrueHarmony and Smart Amplifier, it has 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi cover, and Bluetooth 4.0.

Ports on the Acer Switch 5 includes a USB 3.1 Type-C port and a USB 3.1 Type-A port. The keyboard is backlit and has a Precision Touchpad with Windows 10 gesture support.

Acer really want people to consider using the Acer Switch 5 for heavy work, since they have even made a optional Acer USB Type-C Dock that adds a DisplayPort, and HDMI port, 2x USB 3.1 Type-C ports, 3x USB Type-A ports, as well as audio input for a microphone and audio output for speakers.

The tablet is covered by a anodized aluminum chassis and weighs 920 grams, or 1270 grams in total with the keyboard.

People have been careful about throwing big money on a high-end Windows 10 2-in-1 tablet from Acer, so the predecessor can be had for around $500 regularly. We will see if that changes with the Acer Switch 5.

What does the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 need to be?

Samsung has released the Galaxy S8 and S8+ into the world and it is a gorgeous, if slightly delicate phone. But with the flagship to rule them all out and about now, we can turn our attention to the next big thing from Samsung – the Galaxy Note 8. Given the absolute failure that the Note 7 turned out to be, there are some questions surrounding the Galaxy Note 8 that need to be answered.

Most importantly – what does this phone have to do or be to be a success? Aside from not exploding of course. The Note series of phones is at a very delicate place right now. So, we turn to our editors to help guide Samsung on the next leg of this journey.

“This phone needs to tell a story that says, ‘I’m safe and indestructible.'”

The Note 7 started off so strong and then…literally…fizzled. But battery concerns aside, the Note 7 was widely regarded as the best phone of 2016. That is why it has been so difficult getting people to give them up. The Note 7 looked a lot like a larger Galaxy S7, so if that’s the standard we’re building on, then put an S-Pen into the S8 and call it a day. But that’s not the whole story.

Because the Note 8 needs to help tell the story of a reliable phone that won’t let you down. So the Note 8 needs to be durable and powerful. It needs to be the powerhouse the original Notes were. It also needs that extra layer of build safety that the S8 simply doesn’t offer. I’m not saying it needs to be “Active” level rugged, but I’m not sure the glass sandwich approach and Infinity Display is right for the Note.

I would like to see a Note 8 that has a flat screen (for the S-Pen) and minimal bezels – much like the LG G6. Build it with a rugged, non-glass back plate and removable battery. I know removable batteries are overrated, but there is a core group on Note fanboys who want to see that. Plus, it would reassure audiences that this phone will not blow up, which is a stupid thing to have to reassure people of, but there you go.

“Big, chunky, and a little bit risky.”

Go big or go home. With the Note brand badly harmed by last year’s infamous double recall, but the beautiful Galaxy S8 putting Samsung right back on track for new sales records, the world’s top smartphone manufacturer doesn’t stand to lose much if the Note 8 flops. So why not have some fun and take a bunch of (calculated) risks?

A big, nay, huge battery, this time fitted into an appropriately large, even chunky body. All the sensors and crazy advanced cameras in the world. An extra-durable screen that won’t crack on impact if you just drop your phone on the sidewalk that one time. By the way, a bit of bezel never killed anyone, so if you’d be so kind to leave that in there, thank you very much.

“Nothing, simply nothing. Just exist.”

I was among the unlucky few who never got the chance to lay his hands on the Note 7. However, knowing what the Note 5 was, and what the S8 is, there’s no doubt the Note 8 will be a success.

What does it have to do to be successful? Nothing, simply nothing. Just exist.

Equipping a Galaxy S8+ with an S-Pen is all it needs to be. Sure, we could hope for a flat screen for ease of S-Pen use, and an additional gig of RAM, but that’s pretty much it. Rumor has it there will be dual cameras. The Galaxies are doing a great job with a single camera already, so unless Samsung will put it to good use (not just a gimmick or a me-too thing), just stick to what works.

“A geek magnet that shows what is possible”

Well I was one of the lucky few to use the Galaxy Note 7 most. With the launch of the Galaxy S8, this would be the first time that I find an S to be better than the Note that preceeded it. In the past, and up until the Galaxy Note 4, the Note was always the showcase of what was possible, and the S was the miniaturization of it that came later. How about if we go back to that? I was actually not a fan of the Note 5 being a larger S6, and the same was true of the Note 7.

Yes, the S8 is a good lead to follow, but the S Pen is not a good enough selling point for a Note. It needs to return to being the power user phone. The geek magnet that’s chosen, rather than just another iteration of a mainstream solution.

 LG G6 review

Juan Carlos Bagnell

“Improve the small things…and the camera.”

I don’t think the phone needs to be any bigger than the S8+. No big surprise that the “stumpy thumb” guy would feel that way, but S-Pen will go a LONG way towards rectifying some of the philosophical issues I have with the S8+. I kind of need a phone to give me a good reason why I should occupy both hands in using it, and the Note is one of the few which has a dedicated (and expertly executed) hardware distinction for two hand use.

As for the rest of the phone, I hope we see those small touches addressed. Fingerprint sensor location, if it’s under the front glass or centered under the camera sensor, would help ergonomically. It might be nice to hear Samsung move up to stereo speakers, but this design is already pretty jam packed. A battery bump would be appreciated, but Samsung will likely continue to deliver a more conservative power pack for the next phone model or three. If we can’t get a 4K display, it would be nice to return to an RGB stripe over the current pentile arrangement. And of course, the RAM junkie in our audience would appreciate moving up to 6GB or more.

For me personally, I hope Samsung can continue the conversation with lifestyle durability. Water resistance is great, but I’ve become a fan of phones that also address drop resistance. Maybe a tough improvement to make with curved glass front and back. I also hope we see some kind of camera improvement. My dream would be a larger sensor, something akin to the Lumia 1020, and with Samsung’s shallow trench tech for minimizing the depth of the housing, maybe it wouldn’t need that Oreo disc on the back (though that could be appropriate if the next flavor of Android is Oreo). If we can’t get a larger sensor, then I’d like to see the dual sensor strategy employed by Huawei, where two cameras work in tandem to improve jpeg processing. Zoom is fun, wide angle is nifty, but two camera improving every shot is pretty compelling.

____________________________________________________________________________

“We know what the Note has to be…”

So that’s what we think. What about you? Do you think the Note has to exist and not blow up to be a success? Should Samsung push the envelope with this release or stay conservative? Sound off with your thoughts down below.

First stage of T-Mobile 600MHz spread will be rural

T-Mobile is insistent on launching new cells across the nation this year to take advantage of its impressive 600MHz spectrum haul. Television broadcasters, though, have been insistent on working on a 39-month timeline for frequency switching, vacation and repacking. So, how is the Un-carrier to move on 600MHz?

CTO Neville Ray told investors at the company’s earnings call that he expects some station owners to exit their air this year, but there’s also plenty of space not occupied by a TV signal that T-Mobile can act on.

“Our conservative estimate on the information we’ve secured and put together to date, is that it’s north of a million square miles in the US,” Ray said.

This map from RabbitEars shows where the stations that will be taking action are, along with their signal ranges. There are a few decent metropolitan areas that T-Mobile can light up, given that its license winnings span across the entire nation: Des Moines, Iowa; Fresno, California; Las Vegas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Salt Lake City and; Tucson, Arizona, to name a few. But the vast majority of land comes across mountainous and rural areas in states such as Maine, Montana and the Dakotas.

Chipsets, such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, will have 600MHz bands programmed into their capabilities and those products will be in consumers’ hands “within a year,” perhaps by this holiday season.

Google employees appear to be getting a new pair of headphones

Google employees are getting a new pair of standardized Bluetooth headphones to use while working, Android Police reports.

The headphones were passed into the FCC’s Office of Engineering & Technology for inspection and certification this week. Reports on the headphones picked up as well as speculation as to why Google might be plotting to sell Bluetooth headphones. The drivers on these cans look decent — they also have been in JBL loudspeakers, it seems. Curiously, the headset also lacks a microphone.

Alas, it was an insider that has clarified the situation, providing a picture of a similarly designed pair of headphones. Employees have been using this model for a while, so it’ll be a welcome change of look. Also, maybe they don’t partake in VoIP chats that often or maybe they have standardized external mics nowadays.

It’s their workplace, not ours.

Amazon Echo Look integrates Alexa into style-oriented camera

In addition to potentially listening into everything you say, Amazon’s hoping that you’ll want it to look at what you’re wearing. The e-marketplace launched the Echo Look, a combination smart speaker and camera powered by its digital assistant, Alexa.

In addition to being able to do everything a regular Echo speaker can do, such as inform you and place Amazon orders, you can command Alexa to use the integrated camera with four-LED flash to take a picture or video. The device is mountable through a standard tripod socket, so you could theoretically bring it around on fashion shoots. Yep, fashion shoots.

Unlike other such products that focus on home security, the company is framing this product for styling purposes, allowing you to track your outfit trends and keep note of looks you’ll want to go back to.

Pictures get sent to a linked smart device, where users can interact with the media. A portrait mode will blur out the background to focus your attention on the clothes while the Style Check feature gives a second opinion of outfits through a combination of algorithms and Amazon’s “team of experienced fashion specialists.”

Prospective buyers must request an invitation to buy the $199.99 product at this stage.

Even wearables are exploding nowadays, with Fitbit ‘actively investigating’ such an incident

Well, this is (somewhat) unusual. An unsuspecting Milwaukee woman by the name of Dina Mitchell has come forward with claims of yet another random gadget-exploding mishap causing second-degree burns and raising more questions about the safety of electronic devices we often take for granted.

The unique aspect of the unverified report is the purportedly hazardous product’s category and identity. As Samsung finally wraps up its second Galaxy Note 7 recall, beefing up GS8’s quality control process to prevent a repeat of last year’s debacle, and isolated iPhone fires never amount to anything serious, it was only a matter of time until the same old controversy and discussions focused on wearables.

After all, today’s smartwatches and (most) activity trackers also pack lithium-based rechargeable batteries, and those things will sometimes malfunction. They can even burst into flames with little to no warning if improperly handled, though according to the owner of this particular faulty Fitbit Flex 2, that was absolutely not the case here.

“I was literally just sitting and reading when my Fitbit exploded” Mitchell alleges, adding she received the device as a birthday gift, and merely used it for a couple of weeks before “totally melting.” The fitness tracker itself, the bracelet, everything is destroyed, leaving tiny bits of burnt plastic stuck in the woman’s arm, requiring medical assistance.

As always, while definitely troubling, a complaint of this nature needs context and thorough investigating. Fitbit is already on the case, “actively” looking into the “issue” while assuring other Flex 2 owners it’s completely safe to keep using the products, since no similar incidents have come to the company’s attention over the past eight months or so.

Tablet Deals In April On Android And Windows Tablets And 2-In-1’s

We have seen a few new important tablets being launched the last few weeks, which have generally put tablet sales on the backburner. But now towards the end of the month, we are seeing a couple of interesting April tablet deals, with one tablet from Lenovo in particular offering a lot of hardware for the money during the sale.

So let’s begin with that one. It’s actually a very new tablet, with the 2nd gen. Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus, which is one of these 10.1-inch Lenovo Yoga tablets with that cylinder kickstand at the bottom that house the battery and speakers. The battery has a rated 18 hour battery life, at 9300 mAh, while the speakers are actually 4 JBL speakers with Dolby Atmos.

And that’s not even the best bit, which is the 2560 x 1600 resolution, the 1.6 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 5MP front camera combined with a 13MP rear camera on this Android 6.0 tablet. On sale until April 29 for $254, I don’t know of any tablet that offers that much hardware for under $300.

That’s not the model with the built-in projector though. That would be the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro, but that tablet is also on sale this week, for $399, which is quite a bit more, even though it has 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM (1600 MHz), 64GB of storage, and an even larger 10200 mAh battery.

It’s also possible to save money on buying the brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, now that it has been cut by $15 since launch.

This is the brand new 9.7-inch 2048 x 1536 resolution AMOLED tablet with quad speakers, included S Pen, Android 7.0, fitted keyboard, 4GB of RAM, and 4K camera.

Windows 10 2-in-1’s are also seeing good discounts in April, starting with the Asus Transformer Mini being $100 off again for 3 days, with a sales price of $249, which is also good value for money for a 10.1-inch Windows 10 tablet with detachable keyboard and active stylus pen included.

Some additional highlights of this mini-Surface includes 4GB RAM, full-size USB 3.0, ac Wi-Fi cover, built-in kickstand, and an elegant looking fingerprint reader on the back.

Even cheaper than that is the Teclast Tbook 10 S, for just $169, which brings with it the option of Android as well as Windows. It also comes with the pen inclued, but the pen is not as good as that on the Asus Transformer Mini though, as it lacks palm rejection.

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 have also been cut in price at the same that it launches, so how about that? This is a good tablet in itself, but with the MIUI 8 operating system it ships with over stock Android OS, this one is mainly for Xiaomi users.

Now that the new “Samsung Galaxy TabPro S2” or what is rather called Samsung Galaxy Book 12 have started taking preorders ahead of release in May, the predecessor is having a final clearout sale, where the white edition is on sale the most, at $599, with the keyboard cover included.

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S is is a thin, light 12-inch Windows 10 2-in-1 powered by an Intel Core m3 “Skylake” processor, featuring a AMOLED display with 2160 x 1440 resolution, long battery life, and digitizer support.

Even cheaper than that is the nearly identical rival, Huawei Matebook for $525, which has the same resolution display, just without the AMOLED screen. But that’s still with a keyboard included. And an Intel Core m5 version can even be bought withouth the keyboard for $10 more.
