Intel Announces Project Alloy 'Merged Reality' Headset; Microsoft to Release Holographic Display Support for Windows 10

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced what the company is calling
"merged reality" experiences during the opening keynote of the 2016
Intel Developers' Forum
event in San Francisco Tuesday. Merged reality
envisions an immersive world that users can walk around and interact
with as if they are physically present and participating in the scene,
as delivered by a fully self-contained headset developed under the name
"Project Alloy".

A video demonstration showed one possible experience: an interactive first-person experience
of walking into a party, interacting with guests, pausing the action,
exploring 360-degree views, and moving people around such that the
course of events and the virtual guests' behaviour changed because of
those actions. A more modest live demonstration showed a volunteer
moving around a room and manipulating physical objects such as a switch
and a lathe.

The Project Alloy headset does not need to be
tethered to a PC, allowing users the freedom of walking around and
moving on all six axes. If a user gets too close to a real-world object
such as a wall or another person, it will pop into the scene, allowing
him or her to avoid it. Users manipulate objects in the virtual world
directly, negating the need for hand-held controllers. External sensing
hardware is partially or fully replaced with Intel RealSense 3D cameras
within the headset.

Intel's Alloy hardware and open APIs will be
made available in 2017, allowing other companies to create their own
products and experiences around this platform.

Krzanich also
invited Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President of the Windows and
Devices Group, Microsoft, on stage to talk about how the two companies
are collaborating. Microsoft refers to such experiences as "mixed
reality", and is working on a set of specifications so that everyday
Windows 10 PCs can be used with head-mounted displays such as
Microsoft's own HoloLens.

Microsoft is working towards releasing
v1.0 of the spec in December this year, and will release an update for
Windows 10 in 2017 which will introduce the Windows Holographic Shell,
an interface for head-mounted displays which will enable users to
visualise 2D and 3D Universal Windows applications at the same time.
Microsoft had announced Windows Holographic at Computex this year,
promising that it would run on a wide range of devices. Partners already
on board at the time included Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, HTC, Acer, Asus,
Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI.

Krzanich and Myerson showed a video
demonstration of the Windows Holographic Shell running on an Intel NUC
PC as proof that it is able to deliver a smooth 90fps experience using
Intel's integrated graphics hardware. The combination of Windows
Holographic Shell and the open-source Project Alloy hardware should
allow developers to create their own experiences next year.

Other
announcements made by Krzanich during his keynote included partnerships
with BMW on autonomous vehicles and GE on big data sensing for smart
cities; the new Intel Joule platform for IoT devices; the Euclid
developer kit with integrated RealSense for robotics researchers and
makers; and Aero Platform drone developer kits in the form of a regular
integrated circuit board as well as an actual drone.

Nvidia launches mobile Pascal, drops desktop-class hardware into mobile form factors

Nvidia launched its new mobile Pascal hardware today — and with a twist. Several months ago, we covered rumors that the company would use its standard desktop hardware in laptops rather than creating an entirely separate mobile product line. Turns out, that’s exactly what the company did.

The new GTX 1080, 1070, and 1060 for laptops are almost identically specced to their desktop counterparts. The GTX 1080 is identical, with 2560 cores in both form factors, while the GTX 1070 actually has slightly more cores than its desktop counterpart (2048 in mobile, 1920 on desktop). The 1060 is 1280 cores in both cases. Core clocks have been trimmed slightly, but RAM loadouts are the same — 8GB of GDDR5X on the 1080, 8GB of GDDR5 on the 1070, and 6GB of GDDR5 on the 1060.

What’s most striking about these performance targets is that the TDP on Nvidia’s Pascal family is still quite high by laptop standards — 180W for the 1080, 150W for 1070, and 120W for the 1060. We suspect what’s happening here, however, is that Nvidia will use the best-binned parts for its mobile division, similar to what AMD did for the R9 Nano compared to the Fury X. With that chip, we saw how better binning and tighter clock ranges could make a material difference — the Fury X uses about 17% more electricity per frame of animation compared to its smaller cousin and draws 100W more power at the wall.

The other place Nvidia will likely be able to trim power consumption is in its Nvidia Boost 3.0 technology. As we discussed in our 1070 review, the GPU’s boost clock is more of a formality than an actual limitation. Our 1070 held a GPU clock of 1911MHz under sustained load, well above the 1822MHz defined by Gigabyte. If Nvidia trims its boost clocks to more closely resemble stated boost ranges, it could easily knock some additional power consumption off the card.

Even so, GPUs like the 1070 and 1080 will likely be the province of high-end desktop replacements while smaller systems and form factors make do with the 1060. “Make do,” in this case is something of a misnomer, since the desktop 1060 already offers performance similar to the GTX 980.

Nvidia isn’t just launching new hardware — it’s using the debut of mobile Pascal to put a full court press on G-Sync as well. For the first time, G-Sync panels that support 120Hz and 2560×1440 resolutions.

Hot Hardware had the chance to run the platforms through their paces. We recommend reading their coverage for information on how laptops from MSI and Asus perform, but here’s an example from Metro Last Light (not Redux).

The GTX 1070 is a huge leap forward for absolute performance, while the 1060 is still slightly faster than an Alienware system with the desktop-class GTX 980 that Nvidia launched last year. All in all, these figures are extremely positive — but pricing is still a major question and we don’t expect either GPU to come cheap. The fact is, months after launch, the 1080, 1070, and 1060 are all still selling well above their baseline prices. More expensive product bins are never cheaper — that’s why the R9 Nano debuted at $650 last year, even though its performance was more similar to the $500 Fury.

As for AMD’s mobile plans, the company hasn’t shared anything on that front yet. Polaris’ high power consumption relative to Pascal means AMD will likely use a separate mobile spin on its GPUs to reduce power consumption — though the RX 460 is probably enough of a lightweight to squeeze into some mobile form factors through binning. AMD’s best bet is to focus its own chips on the entry level and midrange gaming space, and Nvidia will likely want top dollar for its own Pascal. Historically, NV has owned most of the mobile gaming space these past few years, so any movement for AMD on this front would be positive.

Lenovo IdeaCentre Y710 Cube, IdeaCentre AIO Y910 Gaming PCs Launched at Gamescom

Lenovo at Gamescom in Cologne has announced two new gaming desktops running on Windows 10. The IdeaCentre Y710 Cube desktop and IdeaCentre AIO Y910 all-in-one PC are priced at $1,299 (roughly Rs. 86,900) and $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,20,400) respectively, and will be made available starting October.

Both the desktops sport a red and black design synonymous, and Lenovo claims that the devices are 'VR ready'. Beginning with IdeaCentre Y710 Cube, the cabinet comes with a built-in handle, and is bundled with an Xbox One wireless controller. It is powered by a sixth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, houses Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1080 paired with 32GB of DDR4 RAM. It offers a hybrid storage system of a 2TB HDD and a 256GB SSD. It supports 4K gaming, and high-quality streaming as well. With respect to connectivity, the Y710 sports one HDMI and VGA port, three USB 3.0 ports, and one USB 2.0 port.

The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO Y910 all-in-one PC is bit a more expensive price point than its companion, and that's because of the 27-inch Quad-HD (2560x1440 pixels) display packed alongside. All the other specifications of the Y910 remain the same as the Y710. It is important to note that the prices mentioned above are of the variants sporting the GeForce GTX 1070 GPU, and the cost of the devices with the highest specs is unknown.

There is no word on when Lenovo plans to launch the devices in India. Lenovo recently launched the Yoga 710 convertible laptop in India for Rs. 85,490. It features a 14-inch full-HD display that can be swiveled 180-degrees to transform into a tablet. It is powered by sixth-generation Intel Core i7-6500U processor, 8GB of 2133MHz DDR4 RAM and a discrete Nvidia GeForce 940M GPU with 2GB of DDR3 video memory. It weighs 1.55kg, and comes with a 256GB SSD. The company is touting a battery life of up to 8 hours with the 4-cell 53WHr battery on board.
