Blass leaks Long Island project, the Huawei Mate 9 Pro

This is no Manhattan project, but it seems like we’ve just collided with a bombshell related to the Huawei Mate 9. The Chinese manufacturer’s presumed fall flagship smartphone may soon go toe-to-toe with Samsung’s typical efforts with curved glass and denser screen resolution, according to Evan Blass of VentureBeat.

Ironically, “Manhattan” seems to be the internal codename for the Mate 9 while the improved version has reportedly been called “Long Island,” but may be known to us as the Mate 9 Pro.

While both phones will get the HiSilicon Kirin 960 chipset, 4GB of RAM and storage options between 64GB and 256GB, Huawei has elected to give the 5.9-inch screen of the Mate 9 Pro a resolution of 2560 x 1440. It seems to be a necessary move this year around because the Pro will be the only one of the pair to offer Daydream VR use on Android Nougat. The regular Mate 9 sticks with full HD with the same physical screen size.

Blass does mention that both phones will keep the Leica-authorized dual-camera system that’s been rumored and implemented on the Huawei P9, though the hardware will reportedly get one-upped.

We expect an official release on November 3 at an event in Munich, Germany.
