Got an iPhone 7 with a broken Home Button? Apple relents with instant virtual one

Got an iPhone? Got a broken home button? Yeah, we figured that would pop up as an issue at some point. And it’s one annoying issue that also plagues the iPhone 7’s Home Button. Yes, even with that little capcitive, Taptic pad we pass as a button.

iphone-assitivetouchLuckily for us, though, Apple has gotten ahead of the issue by implementing fault detection for the button and the Taptic Engine it has connected to the pad. One MacRumors forum member claimed his iPhone 7 turned off suddenly while being charged. When the device restarted, its haptic feedback started screwing up. Then came the above prompt where he was notified that “The Home Button May Need Service” and that he could utilize a software-based one in the meantime.
This definitely makes it easier than hoping you can get to the accessibility settings and activating the AssistiveTouch feature. In fact, iOS 10 was well-coded for the Taptic Engine to detect and work around any faults in this such way.

But we’ll have to watch for the failure rate on this new button to see if it’s worth Apple’s move away from a physical button. We’re just a month into iPhone 7 availability and a long way off a truly button-less iPhone.
